An Inkling of Magic Review

An Inkling of Magic

Laura Hepworth

Laura Hepworth brings us a charming urban fantasy filled with magical creatures, intrigue, and a splash of romance with An Inkling of Magic!  When she was younger, Elspeth once could see magical creatures, creatures that shouldn’t exist.  But now that she’s about to graduate high school, the creatures are appearing again, and even worse, she’s being taunted by a boy who just won’t seem to leave her alone.  I love the way Hepworth builds her magical world that is hidden just beneath our own.  This book has a wonderful mystery to it, and the characters are built in a way that you can’t help but love them.  Elspeth is awkward, but in the best way.  Derek is hawkish but redeemable (which is fun to explore his character).  And my personal favorite was the quirky and ever mysterious book shop owner.  This book celebrates that magical feeling of exploration and sanctuary in libraries and bookstores, and brings that magic literally to life with a compelling drama.  If you love young adult fantasy with nice coming of age elements and plenty of fun magical creatures, definitely come explore the strange plight of Elspeth with An Inkling of Magic!
