G Gruen throws us into a dramatic, thrilling, and darkly funny crime noir drama with The Ride of a Lifetime! Gangster Billy Pearl is seeking a better life for him and his girlfriend, namely escaping the frigid streets of Detroit for the sunny beaches of LA, but he hasn’t the funds to do it. But when his old GTO turns out to be worth way more, Billy finds himself in over his head as he comes under attack from all sides of the criminal underworld, even his own. Gruen expertly crafts the gritty streets of Detroit and brings them to life with excellent characters (and character dialogue). It was fun to see a dark modern crime noir novel that felt lived in as you crawled through the numerous exciting twists, but then to have these surprisingly funny bits of dialogue interspersed to break up the tension and make characters endearing. The Ride of a Lifetime is just that, a really fun ride! If you love your crime dramas gritty but with some fun characters and witty dialogue, definitely come commit some grand theft auto with The Ride of a Lifetime!
